chapter sixteen

Roux

Neither of them mentioned the kiss when they woke up that afternoon, put on their disguises, and returned to stake out the Schofield house, but Roux couldn’t stop thinking about it.

She’d been ready for the bite, though she hadn’t expected it to feel almost as good as sex, but the kiss? That had come from out of nowhere and blindsided her.

She had no idea how to feel. Hours later, she thought her skin still tingled where Ludovic had kissed her, though it had been only a featherlight touch of his lips. Her own lips tingled with need, wanting him to kiss those too. Her head screamed that she had to stop thinking like this—right the hell now.

But pulling her mind away from the kiss made her think about the other thing that had happened this morning. Ludovic had heard her singing, and every time she thought of it, her cheeks blazed red and she turned her face so Ludovic couldn’t see.

The way he’d complimented her voice didn’t make her feel better.

There wasn’t much that could embarrass Roux anymore, but singing in front of people was something she did very rarely, and always on her own terms. Ludovic overhearing her was somehow intimate, and not in a way she liked.

She peeked at him from under her lashes.

Ludovic sat with his elbow resting on the passenger door, one knuckle idly rubbing along his chin, and to anyone else he’d have looked relaxed, but Roux knew better. Beneath that casual facade, Ludovic was coiled and ready.

Her brain went back to the kiss, trying to decide why he’d done it, what it meant, and whether either of them would ever mention it.

The way Ludovic’s body was angled away from her made Roux think that he didn’t want to talk about it, but did that mean he regretted it?

Roux was afraid to ask, not only because she might not like the answer, but because it would mean she’d have to confront her own feelings.

Just that faint press of Ludovic’s lips had sent a bolt of heat straight to her core, making her tremble. Even guys she’d slept with hadn’t ignited that kind of reaction.

Roux gave herself a little shake. They were staking out the house where a child abductor could be hiding, and she was mooning over what could barely be called a kiss?

She swallowed the words that she didn’t know how to say and pushed that kiss to the back of her mind.

But she didn’t forget it.

There was no sign of Schofield that night, and when they returned to the hotel, Ludovic went straight to bed without saying anything. Even when he was asleep, the atmosphere felt charged and tense, like the room was holding its breath.

Roux stifled a sigh as she slipped under the covers.

Maybe by the time they woke up Ludovic would have got over it, and they could be normal with each other again.

Roux’s hopes were dashed when afternoon rolled around, and it was time for her to apply Ludovic’s disguise again.
