After the plumber arrived and got the situation under control, he headed back to his cottage. It was strange, but the more evidence he had that his mother did care for him made him want to be there without her even less. He picked up the phone and dialed Mr. Lewisham’s number before he could change his mind. The phone rang a professional twice before somebody answered.

“Lewisham and Beale solicitors, Pamela speaking.”

“I would like to speak to Mr. Lewisham, please.”

“I’m afraid he’s not available right now. Can I arrange an appointment for you to come into the office?”

“Yes. I need to come in and sign some paperwork.”

Listening while she was quiet, he heard the leafing of pages. “Well, his schedule is full over the next couple of days, but I can offer you an appointment for next Tuesday.”

He sighed, not even caring that it was audible down the line. That was too far away. He needed to sign this place over and the sooner the better, get it off his shoulders. Tuesday was a whole weekend away. He had the time to lose his nerve a thousand times over before Tuesday.

“No, that’s no good. It needs to be today.”

More leafing. “Well, I’m afraid that just isn’t possible. The earliest appointment I can schedule you in for is Tuesday, perhaps Monday afternoon at a push, but that will need to be confirmed with Mr. Lewisham himself. I’m sorry, sir,” she said, her voice becoming stern as if she had predicted his negative response, “but that is the best I can do.”

Harry took the provisional Monday appointment and made himself a cup of tea. That was when he saw another of Tabitha’s notes pinned to the fridge. The sight of it ripped through him, stealing his breath. Evidence that she had been here and was now gone made him feel broken, the fight within leaking away like water from a burst balloon. As much as he tried not to look, to pretend it wasn’t there, once he knew it was it was all he could think about. Snatching at the note he forced himself to read what she had written. You still look adorable when you sleep. It crumpled like a dry leaf in his hand, and he tossed it to the floor as he slipped outside. He needed air, space from the house. A cool breeze brushed against his skin while clouds passed overhead. Setting his mug of tea on the ground he took out one of his pigeons while observing the others scratting around in their coop.

His birds had been one of the few joys in his life over the last decade, and yet now to look at them he felt shame over their captivity. They seemed happy enough, sure, cooing just as he expected and pecking when he gave them food. But although he hated to admit it, Tabitha was right. It wasn’t fair to keep them. They didn’t belong in a cage. Tabitha had wanted him to set them free, had told him that all birds desire their freedom.
