Chapter 6
âGoodness gracious, itâs freezing out there!â Dahlia slipped out of the ankle length winter coat and gave it to the Maitre D hovering near the door. It was the middle of February and although it was the middle of the day, the sun was fighting a losing battle trying to fight its way out of the dark forbidden clouds. Julia had been meeting the older woman for lunch at least once per week from that time they had had dinner at her magnificent home. Dahlia had called her the very next day to set up a luncheon date which had to be postponed because they had an emergency at one of their oil wells in Texas. But since they had been back, she had called Julia and took her shopping amid the girlâs protest and they had become fast friends ever since.
The lunch dates were never at the same place and this time it was at a chic trendy new restaurant in town Julia had discovered was partly owned by David.
âI ordered for you,â Julia smiled up at her, holding up her cheek for the usual gentle kiss.
âHave you gotten bigger since I saw you last?â Dahlia rested one shapely hand on Juliaâs obvious mound. She was dressed in designer jeans and a black figure hugging cashmere sweater. Her blonde hair was caught up in a ponytail. She was only wearing a thin gold chain around her neck, matching bracelets and tasteful gold knobs. She had told Julia that being pregnant did not mean that she had to start wearing tents and had insisted on coming to the house to examine the girlâs closet and added some things of her own. She smiled approvingly at the pale blue pants and delicate cashmere sweater she had on.
âYou saw me last week,â Julia said reproachfully. âI canât look that big.â She was four months pregnant and David hovered over her like a mother hen; it was exasperating.
âDarling, you seem to get bigger every week,â Dahlia smiled at her fondly, signaling the waiter to get a cup of coffee. âWhat are we having?â
âSweet and sour chicken. Ever since I have stopped going to the bathroom every two seconds I have a craving for chicken in every which way.â Julia admitted, sipping her lemon tea.
âAh those cravings,â Dahlia smiled reminiscently. Her two children were grown; the girl was living in Paris and pursuing a designer course while modeling at the same time. Her boy was in Dubai running the European side of Somerville Oils and refinery. âBeing pregnant is probably one of the most powerful things that a woman could ever use on a man. Itâs the one thing they cannot experience and boggles their minds at how we endure so much pain to bring a child into the world and yet still manage to plan dinners and run companies right after. I screamed bloody murder in that delivery room when I was having Jason because I refuse to take anything to take the edge off the pain.
