They built a twenty-foot circle out of rocks, poured some of that “fancy salt,” as Gareth put it, around the entire circumference, and chopped, ground, and mixed all the spell ingredients. Daisy brought out the book with the strange writing. In the car, Daisy mentioned going into debt over the salt, but after what had happened last time, she didn’t want to take chances.

Grace and Monica stood off to the side, watching the hunters ring the circle.

By the fire at the circle’s head, Alice held the book for Daisy with one hand and offered the other to her.

Daisy produced a long silver dagger and, taking her hand, pierced the tip of Alice’s pinky finger. Grace counted seven drops of blood as they fell into the bowl of spell ingredients.

It was funny how much Daisy talked about the sisters and their witchcraft but used spells as much as they did. Why she declared herself a hunter and not a witch was a question Grace might ask if they lived through the night.

The flames jumped when Daisy started reading in a guttural voice.

Eyes narrowed against the smoke floating into her face and up her nose, Grace listened to the incantation. The language vibrated deep in her bones, words she almost recognized. And in her head, beyond the smoky wood scent burying itself in her sinuses, deeper than the words Daisy grunted, was a peculiar sense of being in two places at once.

In front of her, the back of Daisy’s head bobbed up and down in time with her strange words. But also, before her, Daisy’s face rippled in the heat of the fire. Pain coursed through her, joined by the feeling of being stripped down naked before this group, in the midst of the circle between them.

Monica clutched her arm. “Stop,” she whispered, her lips almost touching Grace’s ear. She tugged.

Grace’s feet hit the dirt. Cold realization washed over her, starting at the crown of her head and covering her in a sheet of sweat and fear. She turned to Monica and whispered, almost against her lips, “I was floating toward her, wasn’t I?”

Mon licked her lips and grimaced, firelight flickering in her eye. “I didn’t bring you any earplugs. Goddamn it, what was I thinking?”

Grace clutched her arm. “It’s too late now. We’re here. We have to do this. Karithexis has Natalie’s family in the palm of her hand because of me. It’s my responsibility.”

Wrapping her other arm around her, Monica shook her head. “It’s not. It’s not your fault; it’s not your responsibility. You don’t have to die here tonight.” She pulled Grace close and shivered against her.

Daisy continued with the spell, all her concentration on the circle before her. Still chanting, she held out her hand.

Alice dropped the hair in it. Hair Monica had taken from Karithexis’s pillow, hairbrush, and even the shower drain. Assuming she was the only one in the house with white hair, they’d made sure to collect only those, even though Daisy assured them the spell would summon one thing and one thing only.
