A couple of hours later, weâre walking back to my place, with Max carrying Sammie who pooped out about halfway through the parade, napping in my lap.
âIâm going to head home and get cleaned up,â Max whispers, following me inside and setting Sammie down on the couch.
She rubs at her eyes, rolling around a little bit, but unable to get comfortable again, she wakes up, a bit of a grumpy face on her.
âMommy,â she says, her voice groggy and hoarse. âI still want to go to the fireworks. Donât forget.â
âI didnât forget. Max is going to go home and shower so he can get rid of his sticky hair and then weâll go watch the fireworks.â
Sammie lays back down, her eyes still a little heavy and I push back her hair, bending down to kiss her forehead. Sheâs been having so much fun here that it feels like a vacation, and I have to agree with her. Back in Florida, we barely left our condo since I didnât have a job and she wasnât going to school or daycare. If we did go out, it was to the beach, everything else was too far to walk to.
Being here in Tahoe has been a dream come true. I havenât needed a car and with the discounted childcare and low rent, we have more than enough money to survive on. Even better, the library is close and we spend a lot of time there when Iâm not working.
âIâll be back to pick you both up. We have to drive over to my parentsâ house,â he tells me as we walk toward the front door. âI picked up a booster seat for Sammie since I figured you didnât have one.â
âMax, you didnât have to do that, but youâre right, I donât have one.â Iâm not sure why, but Iâm suddenly overcome with a sense of guilt at Max buying a booster seat for Sammie. Itâs something I should have, but I donât. I donât even have a car, and itâs things like this that make me realize that I wasnât fully prepared when we left Florida. Iâm not sure how I could have been though.
âI know that, and get that look off your face,â Max says, smiling as he lifts my chin to look at him. âI know what youâre thinking, Harper.â
âYou do?â
âIâve gotten pretty good at reading you, and no you should not feel bad that you donât have a booster seat for Sammie. You donât even have a car.â
âFine,â I reply, blowing off the fact that he is totally right. Itâs crazy that weâve only been together for a few weeks, but it feels like much longer.
I push up on my toes, kissing him with a smile on my face. âWeâll see you in a bit.â
