Under Lake Shore Drive

We turned left through an opening in a black cast-iron fence, following a paved walk. The walk dropped right, making me concentrate on my footing. It’s hard to descend slopes with a wooden leg. I was focusing on the downgrade and avoiding the shrubs on the side of the path, when Terry, boxes in hand, stopped and whistled.

“A tunnel!”

I looked up and past the branch of a small tree. “We’re going under the road! Sure enough!”

At the underpass, the path flattened, and I could walk easily. The air inside the tunnel cooled us.

“How did you know this was here?” I called ahead to Dad.

“We visited once or twice when you were in the hospital.” Dad’s voice echoed in the damp and gloom. “They had just repaved the bike trail and finished upgrading the whole area.”

“There’s a bike trail?” Terry asked. “I should have brought my ramp!”

No one even commented on this, for several obvious reasons.

1. We could not have brought the ramp on the train.

2. We had no bicycles with us.

3. Terry had injured himself several times on the ramp, and Mom had banned it from use for the time.

We emerged out of the end of the tunnel, blinking in the heat and sunshine. The path rose to a wide lawn dotted with young trees. Behind the treetops, a stone tower pointed to the sky.

“Oh, look!” Larry said. “There’s the lake!”

Like a path paved in silver, a strip of Lake Michigan winked at us in the afternoon sun.

“And on that side!” I nodded to the south, where a sandy beach stretched along Lake Shore Drive.

“Welcome to Promontory Point,” Dad said.

“This is a pretty nice-looking landfill!” Larry said. “Hey look! A fountain!”

Terry shoved the walkie talkie boxes into Dad’s hands. All three of us made a mad dash to the fountain. A sculptor had carved it out of granite and polished the outside until it shone like glass. On three sides of the fountain’s central tower, water spurted out for drinking. A green sculpture of a fawn curled on the very top of the fountain, above our heads.
