CHAPTER SIX

I pushed that thought from my mind. Kai wasn’t going to save me. Hell, he wanted me to join him and the rest of them in destroying the Shade and the monsters. It didn’t matter how much I still cared. Our views of the Shade Rasa, the monsters within, and Mother Earth were too different. We didn’t want the same things, and I refused to become like the rest of them.

Growling in annoyance, I threw back the covers. It was three in the morning. Sleep was impossible, and I had to do something. I went to my door without turning on the light and not bothering to change out of my tee shirt and pajama bottoms. Twisted the handle and carefully pulled it open, hoping Duncan was on a break.

Peered out. Duncan was gone. Surprised elation filled my veins. Followed by worry. Was his absence some kind of a test? Or had I truly lucked out? I debated the question internally and decided I didn’t care.

Once I was in the hall, it occurred to me I should’ve put on shoes. My bare feet grazed the posh carpet, reminding me I wasn’t prepared to rescue anyone. Still, I wasn’t going back. I’d been given this rare opportunity, and I had to keep going until my luck ran out.

Turning left in the corridor would lead to the cafeteria and the training center. Which meant I took a right. If I could make it through the checkpoint at the end of the wall, that exit dropped me in the kitchen. From there, I would pass the dining room and wind up in the living area. There I would find Yara.

At the idea of seeing my monster friend, I started to a jog. Within moments, I came to the end of the hall and the ominous door. Usually, the guard would knock, and another would open the panel at the top and ask for a number. Once that number was given, we would be allowed in.

I didn’t knock but turned the handle just to try it. Beyond surprised, the knob turned, and the door opened.

“The hell?” I went through, finding myself in the kitchen just off the dining area. The lights were off as I passed the enormous oak table, but an eerie green glow came from the living room, and I hurried on. There was a part of my mind that knew this was wrong. Warning bells were ringing loudly in my head, but I ignored them. I had a chance to see Yara, to free her. I couldn’t pass that up.

Upon stepping into the living room, it became apparent that one of the captured monsters was giving off the green light. I moved toward it. With each step, the green aura grew.

Hello, I said into my mind, aiming the comment at the monster. With closer inspection, I saw it was an Amarkey. With a snout like an armadillo and the nimble, furry body of a spider monkey.

Friend of Yara, came the response.
