Chapter 9: Ghost Dog

They play the drums. The sun has set. In darkness they play. In shadows and darkness they play the drums. Sparks from the fire! Like birds they rise. The heat of fire, the cold of the night. They sing. They sing. They sing:

Aha, aha! I know the truth.

I know what lies hidden

In the secret heart.

My pain is fire

My pain is hunger

My pain is my children

Dead in my arms.

Tomorrow I set forth

Tomorrow I go out

Tomorrow I journey

To the home of my soul.

They dance, left and right. They circle around. The sparks fly up. The night claps its hands. The night wraps around them, like a blanket a child. They sing: Aha, aha! The birds cry out. The night is silver. Their breath is clouds. They cry: Tomorrow! Their whistles blow. Their rattles shake. The tassels fly upon their sleeves. They spin, and spin, and spin again. They beat the drums. They make the thunder. They are the heartbeat. They know the truth. They sing: Aha, aha!

The dog lifts his head. His eyes are gold ingot. His feet are the wind. He opens his mouth and sings in the silence. He sings in the heartbeat. He sings in the thunder. He sings:

Aha, aha!

I know the truth!

I know what I am.

In my secret heart

I am a king.
