Alannah left the small tavern after she finished her morning meal. There had been some surprised to see her again when she did not return to her room, but none who were unhappy to see her. More than one remarked that she seemed calmer and more at ease than before, but hardly turned into a servant of whatever beast the ziggurat held.
Having a breakfast with others had been pleasant enoughâand the food had felt lovely after sheâd spent so much of the day prior working up an appetiteâbut before long she bid the village farewell and turned to leave.
It wasnât long before she ended up at the ziggurat again.
I wonder if the forest will ever overtake these ruins, or if something that was maintained when they were still used actively keeps it at bay? Perhaps this one place is responsible for the forestâs end, and without it, the village itself would be consumed by trees⦠Alannah had certainly seen stranger things, and it was a surety that none of the runes looked terribly damaged. Plates of gold had been removed, and precious stones, but it would be easy for all of that to be ornamental or decorative.
Alannah wasnât a historian, or a mage of any description. She just enjoyed pondering the way parts of the world worked as she savored their unique sights. She moved deeper into the ruins until she reached the central ziggurat, and her heart sank in her chest.
The bedroll was gone, as was the collection of food. The small setup of containers still formed an ideal place for a nest or a temporary bit of bedding, but there was nothing there to make it look like a home. Of course it wasnât as though Alannah was looking to move in. Were she to stay in the area she was sure the nearby village might be a decent place to look for accommodations. The people were nice, the food was good, and it was near enough.
Nialla was gone.
Her shoulders slumped, and she resisted the urge to unsheathe her blade and try breaking it against one of the walls embedded deep within the earth. It was an important part of her, but it felt like sheâd lost another important part of her that was much harder to replace.
She sighed and made her way to where Niallaâs possessions had been, and fell to the ground. She leaned her pack back against one of the containers and closed her eyes.
Where would one even go to look for a snake such as her? I could try the forest⦠But she said she lived in other ruins. She was just visiting⦠Alannah frowned, twisting her lips as she shifted in place, her arms crossing over her scale covered chest. Thereâs no way I could find her again, and I donât want to find another⦠Lamia? Naga? Iâve heard both names⦠Surely she isnât a gorgon, I think that has to do more with hair than oneâs lower half⦠Ugh.
