Charlie
After spending the day watching Grace working her charm on shopkeepers, telling her about the miscarriage, having her touch his backside, and seeing her face full of life, Charlie was taking long, deep breaths as he stood under the hot water of his shower. It wasnât even dinner time and he felt more washed-out than the cubicle.
Oh jeez, what a day.
He lowered his face, allowing the heat to consume him as steam hid his tight forehead muscles.
âCharlie?â
A spray of water hit him straight in the eyes as his head shot up from the beige-tiled floor. He turned to see if Grace could see him naked through the screen.
âGrace?â He cuffed away the dollop of water that had landed in his mouth. âIs everything okay?â He could make out movement heading towards the toilet.
âYeah, I justâ¦â
He couldnât see her through the steam, and her voice was barely audible. âWhat was that?â He placed one hand on the glass divide of the shower and leaned around its curve to see her sitting on the closed toilet seat. Wiping his hand down his face, he widened his eyes and blinked a couple of times. âYou okay, Grace?â
Her eyes were on the pink dressing gown belt she was twiddling on her lap. âI was just waiting to jump in the shower.â
âOh, erm, right. I wonât be a sec.â He went to turn back to quickly shampoo his hair, but she called his name again. Meeting her eyes this time, he could instantly tell she wanted to talk about more than her evening shower.
Grace stood, sighed deeply, then let her robe fall to a slump at her feet, revealing her naked body along with a slightly awkward stance.
Oh my God.
Any other time, he wouldnât be standing there gawping like a dumbstruck idiot.
Come on, Charlie, get it together, man. Thatâs your wife standing there, obviously wanting you. What you gonna do about it?
âErm, Grace, honey, I⦠What⦠Umm.â
Shit, I donât know what to say.
âCharlie, can I get in the shower with you?â
He knew his eyes had just widened, because he could feel the stretch of his brow. Under normal circumstances, he would have himself wrapped up in her by now, and she wouldnât be standing there looking nervous, having to ask. He swallowed hard, desperately trying to form words that made sense and fitted their unusual situation and, in his case, unexpected situation.
âGrace, ermâ¦â He wiped his face again, and her eyes left him to look sullenly down at her robe. Suddenly, he felt like crap because he could see she felt rejected, and that wasnât something he had ever done to her. âSure,â he added quickly, giving her a wave of the hand towards him.
She hesitated, clearly deciding between the dressing gown and shower. Charlie was taking full blame for that indecision. Grace had obviously built up a whole heap of courage to come at him with nakedness and steamy shower scenes.
âGrace.â He spoke softly and held out his hand. âItâs okay, honey.â He wriggled his fingers, and she smiled slightly at the pruned tips.
