Chapter Twelve

Jeremiah knocked on the front door to his house, giving Chelsea enough time to be aware of his presence before he entered. It was the same routine he'd done since she moved in. Every day when he visited his betrothed, the house smelled of her rose water perfume, light and subtle. Flowers were arranged on tables throughout their home.

Their home. Indeed it was. Chelsea spent so much time there, he'd encouraged her to decorate as she saw fit. She did so with excitement. With the help of his mother and Beatrice, she made the house a place Jeremiah longed to come home to, if only for a few hours each night.

Today, as he entered, a waft of stew greeted him at the door. His stomach rumbled, reminding him that he skipped his noon meal. The mercantile had been busier than normal. Probably due to his customers wanting to get a good look at his bride-to-be. Since she wasn't there, the men stood to one side, discussing the upcoming election and if anyone would be willing to run against Stuart, while the women occupied the other side of the store, gossiping about when he would get married and trying to pry him for more information than he was willing to give.

Jeremiah peeled off his coat and hung it on the hook near the door. He turned in time to see Chelsea gliding toward him, her lips lifting in a warm welcome.

"You're home," she gushed, stopping inches away from him.

He lifted the back of her hand and brought it to his lips. "When I have you to come home to, I find myself closing the store faster than ever before."

Chelsea's cheeks darkened as her eyes fluttered. "You needn't say such things, Jeremiah."

"Indeed, I do." Jeremiah winked at her.

The little dimple on her chin appeared. "Are you hungry?"

He wanted to keep flirting with her, but seeing her shift from one foot to the other, he chose to put aside his wants and focus on her instead. "Famished."

"Good. I've been busy today, getting our meal prepared." Chelsea motioned him forward into the kitchen. "Beatrice is eating with your parents, so it's just the two of us."

Relief spread through him. Before discussing his future with his father, Jeremiah needed to speak with Chelsea first. Being a mayor's wife required her to be the center of attention, even hosting dinner parties. She'd be working right alongside him, preparing for and organizing each of the festivals the town held throughout the year.

Chelsea was from Boston, society filled with socialites. Surely, she'd be able to handle a small town gathering every so often. Doubt forced its way in the back of his mind. She did have a shyness about her, but perhaps that had something more to do with the spots on her arms and hiding away from people than actually not wanting to be with others.

"Sit," Chelsea encouraged, tapping the back of his chair. "I'll have supper on the table in a moment. Tell me about your day.
