Chapter Twenty-One

Saturday dawned brilliantly, with September sunshine peeking around Max’s curtains like a larking voyeur as he pressed me into the mattress and we went another round of our new joint hobby. Then he made coffee and slices of heavy German rye bread with pepper paste and chives and we fought over the local newspaper.

Nothing had changed and yet everything had. Max had been right last night. I was very not ready to talk about it.

‘Morning!’ Max’s housemate Miska said as she breezed through the kitchen to the fridge. ‘So much for the “just friends” thing, hey?’ I sucked my coffee through my nose and spent the next few moments spluttering. Miska glanced back from the fridge with a chuckle. ‘I haven’t heard noises like that through the wall for a long time.’

‘Maybe I should get a hotel room,’ I mumbled through gritted teeth after she’d swept out of the kitchen again.

Max studied me seriously for a moment before giving me a quick smile. ‘Or I could just get a gag.’ I decided he was joking, although I wondered.

I’d decided it was time to take my destiny into my own hands and buy a dirndl for that day’s challenge – waitering in a beer tent. Although we might have earned good tips by cross-dressing, I would never expose Max to the obnoxiousness of drunk people and this way I could choose my own outfit.

Max had a fit of laughter when I met him and the others at the Theresienwiese after my morning shopping. I had perhaps overcompensated. The blouse of my dirndl buttoned right up to my neck and the bodice was less S&M nipple device and more Nanny McPhee, although it was a pretty sky-blue colour that reminded me of Max’s eyes.

I should have known the day would go downhill after the beautiful start. The first thing that went wrong was that Max reached for my hand and I pretended I hadn’t noticed. But I noticed everything about his reaction to my panicked rebuff, from the bob of his Adam’s apple as he swallowed to the tightness in his jaw. The remorse pulled me in too many different directions.

I felt as though I’d become someone else. The old me would never in a million years have slept with Max. It unnerved me and I didn’t know what to do next and I hated the feeling.

Did he seriously want to hold my hand in public? Why, when we’d go back to being friends when I went home next week? It wasn’t like I’d call him every week, chatting manically about everything, like always, but flash him my bits at the end. Actually, that idea had its appeal, but I still couldn’t go public about the development in our relationship until I understood what was going on.

‘Are you okay, Fi?’ Ryan asked suddenly and I realised I’d missed a strategy talk and probably had a strange grimace on my face.

‘Yes,’ I snapped. ‘This is for team points. We pool our tips at the end and whichever team gets the most tips wins.
