âLetter to a Palestinian Friendâ
In remembrance of Salwa Salem,
to whom I hold deep gratitude
for the generous friendship with which she allowed
me to know the fascinating story of her life as
a Palestinian woman
Salwa Salem, Con il vento nei capelli. Vita di una donna palestinese a cura di Laura Maritano, Firenze, Giunti 1993.
Dear Ruba,
I do hope you accept the proposal I am about to make to you. Some weeks ago, I received an e-mail from Rosemary Sayigh, who invited me to contribute to a collection of testimonials from several persons she had invited to describe âhow and why they became âpro Palestinianâ â.
I was immediately attracted to accept the invitation: it would be an excellent opportunity for me to rethink â after more than thirty years â how important sharing initiatives with both Palestinian women and the few Israelis who opposed the Occupation became in my life. At first I was afraid that I wouldnât be able to express myself adequately in a language I donât master. But suddenly I realized that Rosemary herself was suggesting an âeasyâ approach, i.e. âmuch like a letter to a friendâ. Such a possibility would help me feel at ease, if I could find the ârightâ person to write to. It is to you, Ruba, that I turn. First I knew you as Salwaâs dear daughter, but over the years, our friendship has become independent of Salwa, and strong.
