KING

Birds chirped loudly in the trees above me.

“Put your phone away,” Zoey’s voice whispered, followed by the sound of a camera shutter going off. “Cael,” she hissed, and a loud groan filled the air.

“What do you two want?” I huffed, my arms tensing around a body that was not my own. I opened my eyes, the sun glaring down over me, nose buried into the crown of Ella’s messy blonde hair. Shit.

“Just proof of the workplace canoodling,” Cael waved his cell phone in the air as Zoey sheepishly hid behind his massive frame with reddened cheeks. “Morning, Peachy,” he giggled as she stirred in my arms.

“Cael, I swear to god, if you don’t fuck off right now—”

Ella squeezed my thigh to hush me, and all the blood in my body rushed between my legs as she worked to get comfortable again. I needed to get out of this situation, which needed to happen faster.

Surprisingly, I had never slept so well crammed into the hammock. Ella’s legs tangled around mine, her chest pressed to my stomach and head on my chest. Who knows how long we might have laid there if our sleep hadn't been disturbed.

“Breakfast is ready,” Zoey finally piped up. “We couldn’t find you, and then Cael mentioned you had set up the hammock, so we came looking.”

“After breakfast, we’re choosing teams, and I have heavy bets placed on when you get picked this year, so get up.” Cael kicked the bottom of the hammock, his foot digging into my ass.

A rabid growl vibrated from me, and a sleepy laugh filled the air as Ella turned her face into my chest, resting on her chin to look up at me through her heavy lashes.

Everything faded away.

I loved how she looked first thing in the morning.

Her lips curled into a lazy smile as she pushed up to take my bottom lip between hers. “Good morning,” she scrunched her nose up, and all the lines of her scar wiggled like tiny bolts of lightning.

“Morning,” I returned, letting her kiss me again despite the audience.

“Morning,” Cael moaned, rubbing his hands down over his arms in a mocking motion as he kissed the air.

“Cael?” Ella turned to look at him, pushing up from her position and untangling her legs from mine. “Run,” she huffed, jumping up from the hammock and taking off after him.

There was no way she’d catch him, not with her five-nine frame against his six-three, but she sure tried. Laughter filled the air as she cornered him up against a grouping of trees he couldn’t slide through and socked him playfully in the gut. Whatever he said to her next dampened the mood, but not in a sad way. They grew quiet, and Cael became more serious than I had ever seen him. Every so often, his eyes flickered up from her over to me.

Zoey disappeared into the house, leaving me alone long enough to adjust my shorts and roll from the hammock to the grass beneath. I pressed my forehead into the damp ground, centering my thoughts as I heard Ella’s soft footsteps approach.
