5.2 Campus-Wide Virtual-Physical Blended Environment

The concept of the metaverse entails the provision of expansive and enduring environments that enable users to collaboratively partake in experiences that bridge the realms of the physical and the digital (Fig. 5.1). Augmented reality (AR) is a pivotal technological tool that facilitates the seamless integration of digital content into real-world settings (Braud et al., 2022). The chapter depicts a vision of a campus-wide metaverse application comprising immersive environments and mixed reality. The concept of an MR-driven metaverse campus presents an exceptional prospect for seamlessly integrating digital content with physical infrastructure, thereby offering contextually relevant services to individuals within the campus environment. The MR environments can empower university campuses by offering strengthened information and functions, for instance, navigation, campus information, virtual-physical blended events, and demonstrating student achievement (e.g., entertainment application, artworks) to other campus members ubiquitously.
