âIâm going to train you!â I announced to Bea.
She frowned, looking up from the dandelion crowns sheâd been weaving us. âMs. Pume and Ms. Jekyl already are. And I donât need to train. Youâre the one who wants to win the trials, not me.â
I sighed. âDonât you at least want a chance at it?â
âNope.â She plucked out another flower to start weaving it in. âI donât think marrying some stranger and having to rule an entire country is worth getting to keep an Affinity I barely use. Iâm just going to wait for this all to be over, find someone to fall in love with for real, and then go live happily ever after in some little house somewhere.â
âClose by enough to come visit me all the time after Iâm queen?â
She smiled. âOf course.â
âWell, you still need to train at least a bit. People can get hurt in the trials. You canât just barely use your Affinity until then and expect to be able to protect yourself. If we go right to the edge of the protection wards, we wonât be able to do much, but at least weâll be able to practice a bit.â
âI still practice during my training slots, just like everyone else. If thatâs enough for them, itâll be enough for me.â
âI know but youâre notâ¦â I trail off.
Bea scowled. âIâm not as good as them,â she finished for me.
I winced even though it was what I was going to say. âBea, thatâs not- youâre good at different things.â I gesture to her lap. âYouâre better at flower crowns.â
She scoffed. âFlower crowns? Thatâs the best you could come up with?â
I put a hand on her knee and looked her straight in the eye. âYouâre the most perfect person Iâve ever met, Bea,â I promised her. âIt just felt rude to say youâre better at existing than everyone else.â
The corner of her mouth twitched. âThatâs better.â
âPlease come practice with me?â I begged. âJust once a week. I just want you to be ready.â
âFine,â she sighed.
I grinned. âCome on.â
Beaâs powers were even weaker at the edge of the wards than mine were, so we spent our first few sessions just trying to get them to work at all. Sheâd grow small vines or get flowers to bloom slightly faster while I worked on getting my balls of fire to grow as big as I could. After weeks turned into months and Bea still wasnât getting any better though, I decided to change strategies.
âMaybe we should work on non-Affinity-based combat.â
She frowned. âA fist isnât going to stop fire or lighting, Saffi. Letâs just give up. I hate training.â
I shook my head. âIt might not stop affinities, but learning how to dodge them can keep you safe. Come on, stand up.â
Bea sighed. âI donât want to, Saffi. Iâm tired.â
âYou canât just decide youâre tired at the trial! Stand up.â
âI donât want to.â
âDo it!â
She begrudgingly got to her feet.
âOkay, now dodge this!â I grabbed the nearest rock and threw it at her.
