We ended up going to a fast care that wasn’t too far from my house, and I was immediately happy to see that there weren’t very many people there. It didn’t take long to get signed in and a few minutes later I was escorted to an exam room with my mama in tow. As soon as the door closed behind us, she immediately started rummaging through the cabinets and drawers. “Girl, what are you doing?”

“Uh girl, what it look like? I’m shopping. Why buy this stuff when they got plenty?” She shrugged, throwing Band-Aids and alcohol pads in her purse. I couldn’t even do shit but laugh as she stole everything from Kleenex to sticky notes before sitting down and crossing her legs. It was right on time too, because not even a second later there was a tap at the door and a middle-aged white woman entered.

“Hello, I’m Doctor Graham. I heard you were having some stomach issues? Wanna tell me exactly what’s going on?” she asked, barely looking up from her notepad.

“Uh yeah, I’ve been having some nausea and dizziness. I thought maybe it was food poisoning but once it hit day three I thought it might be a virus. None of the things I’ve taken are helping and I still can’t keep anything down.” Not being able to eat had me ornery. Not only was I a foodie but I was also a thick girl, and I didn’t appreciate the way my stomach had been acting up on me.

“Well, I can certainly understand your frustration. Now, we can definitely rule out food poisoning since it’s been so many days, but I also don’t think it’s a virus either.” She glanced at my mama before shifting her eyes to me. “Do you mind me asking when is the last time you had sex?”

Confused, I looked at her ass like she was crazy before it dawned on me. She thought I was pregnant! Dizziness hit me as I shook my head roughly. “I’m not pregnant. I haven’t even had sex in months to get pregnant. Plus, I’ve been having my period regularly.”

“You’re damn right you’re not!” my mama cut in, garnering a wary look from the doctor who paused before continuing.

“Okay, I hear this a lot and it’s a common misconception, but sometimes bleeding is normal in early pregnancy and women often assume it’s a regular menstrual but—”

“Look ma’am, I’ve been pregnant a couple of times in the last few years and I never bled. That’s how I even knew in the first place besides my breasts being tender. Morning sickness isn’t even one of the symptoms I get.” I cut her off even as my mind wondered. There was no way I’d spent the last year trying to get pregnant by Deshawn’s ass again to save our marriage only to pop up pregnant during our divorce. The last thing I wanted was any ties to that man, but after suffering through miscarriage after miscarriage, I couldn’t see myself getting rid of this blessing.
