Her big alien was not at all what Isa had expected. When she’d signed the contract for the mate program, she’d assumed that when her match got her back to his rooms, he’d fall on her in a mad frenzy of lust. They didn’t have women, so how long had it been since any of them had had sex?

A frown creased her brow as she looked around the enormous room Berrick had left her in, citing a few duties he needed to clear up before they had dinner. He’d reassured her that nothing like the incident in the medical bay would happen again and that she was perfectly safe in here. She believed him. He’d been so pissed at the bed malfunction and so concerned about her it had melted her defenses against him a little.

And… dinner. She’d never thought she’d be having dinner with an alien. Wrapping her arms around herself, she just hoped it would be something she could identify… if he wanted her to eat alien squid or something, she’d hurl. She hadn’t ever had seafood, only seen it in movies, but even the idea made her feel sick.

Putting that thought aside, she walked around the room. It was massive, so it would be more accurate to call it a suite, just without the walls. The bed on one wall was easily bigger than some apartments she’d lived in. Her gaze skittered away from that for the moment. Would he expect her to share it with him tonight?

Wandering around, she picked up odd metal ornaments that looked like gears off his desk, but then her attention was hijacked by the pictures on the wall. Most of them were of different alien landscapes, a sunrise with three suns, and then, on one side, was a picture of Berrick with another alien.

She gravitated toward the picture. It was an old one, of her alien as a younger man. He didn’t have the thick beard he sported now, but a smattering of stubble over his cheeks. He stood with his arm looped over the other alien’s shoulders, a wide smile on his face. She reached up, touching the picture. Who was the other man? He was dark-haired and eyed like Berrick, just as tall but more slender. Who was he… a friend? Whoever he was, he had to be important to Berrick for him to have kept this picture and for it to be the only one here.

A chill rolled down her spine. Was he a lover? Maybe Berrick had ended their relationship to join the mate program. She nibbled her lip, not liking that thought at all. Not the thought of Berrick with someone else—he was her alien after all—or the thought of breaking up someone’s relationship.

She looked at the picture some more, but it wasn’t giving up its secrets, so she turned away to explore. A round metal plate on the floor near the desk caught her attention, and she stood looking down at it for a moment.
