The Blizzard Witch carried the seagull to her ice yaranga. There, she struck the ground with her staff and broke the spell. The seagull’s feathers fell away and the mother stood before her once more.

“You shall stay here until you have sewn me the finest robe,” said the Blizzard Witch, and she gave the mother a cloth of snowflakes and a needle of ice.

The mother threaded the needle and began to sew. Although her hands grew numb she could only think of her children, left alone without a fire to warm them.

Yatto and Tayune put on their snowshoes and set off at once to look for their mother. As they were wondering which way to go, over the horizon came the Sun, riding a sleigh pulled by a reindeer with golden antlers.

“Can you tell us how to find the Blizzard Witch?” asked Tayune.

“She lives in the mountains,” said the Sun and he shone his beams across the tundra to show them the way. “It will be a long journey, with many dangers.” He gave them a bow and three shining arrows. “These will help you if you find yourselves in trouble.” Then he rode on, over the horizon, and his light faded away leaving the dusk once more.

Yatto and Tayune headed across the tundra toward the mountains. They hadn’t gone far when a young deer appeared, being chased by a wolf. Yatto fired one of the Sun’s shining arrows to scare the wolf away.

The deer thanked him. “I’ve lost my mother,” it said.

“Then stay with us, little one,” said Tayune. “We have lost our mother too.” And so they went on together.

From her home, high in the mountain, the Blizzard Witch saw them coming. She sent a mountain giant to lull the children to sleep with his magic horn.

Yatto and Tayune were afraid when they saw the giant come striding toward them across the tundra. However, he was so big and heavy that before he could reach them he grew tired and lay down for a rest.

Silently, Tayune crept up and stole the magic horn. She lifted it to her lips and the horn played a tune that sent the giant into a deep sleep and so on they went.

There was still far to go when suddenly the deer’s mother came bounding toward them. She was so happy to be reunited with her lost fawn that she offered to carry Yatto and Tayune to the mountain. They climbed onto the deer’s back and off she ran, faster than the wind, with her little one beside her. When they reached the foot of the mountain, Yatto and Tayune thanked the deer and said goodbye. Then they began to climb the steep, rocky path.
