To summarize, you must be consistent in managing your classroom. Your messages must be explicit, and they must be the same, day after day after day. These are the behaviors and attitudes expected in this classroom: enumerate them. These behaviors and attitudes are not acceptable in this classroom: enumerate them. The messages must be spoken, enacted, and pervasive.

When you get the behaviors and attitudes you want, praise them, specifically and generously, to students, parents, counselors, coaches, sponsors, administrators, and the community at large!

When you get something else, act—quickly and appropriately: first, by gently redirecting; if that doesn’t work, by speaking directly to the student, apart from his or her peers; if that doesn’t work, by speaking to parents or guardians; if that doesn’t work, by referring the student to the counselor; and if that doesn’t work, by referring the student to the assistant principal. The last resort is removing the student from the class—and from the opportunity to learn.

You must remember, too, that managing the classroom is your responsibility. While you may need occasional support from counselors and administrators, that support should be tapped only when essential and always with prior agreement. Members of the support staff are there to help in establishing a network of support for students, but they cannot and should not be held responsible for everything that goes on in your classroom.
