Chapter 10

Charlotte had her paints mixed and ready, the perfect brush in hand, yet she ignored her canvas, instead staring out the windows that flooded her studio with all its beautiful light.

Or they were supposed to flood the studio with beautiful light, except on days like today when they had been thwarted by Mother Nature. The sky was gray and dreary, the clouds blocking out the sun and dulling the colours of the world.

Not that it mattered much to her. She was not staring at anything in particular, which was unusual. She had never found herself to be one for woolgathering. Inevitably, she would see something she wanted to capture with her pencils or paints, and her idle thoughts would shift to possible perspectives and colour palettes.

But today, she felt wholly uninspired and knew precisely why.

It had been over a week since her final trip to the cottage with Oliver, and she could not stop reliving every moment that had transpired between them.

It had been a life-changing revelation. She had learned so much about him and herself.

Since she had left him, the world did not seem as bright now, and it sapped her of any inspiration for her art.

She wished she had more chances to draw him, not for the education, but so she could have more memories.

She wanted to capture the way he had looked hovering over her as she lay beneath him, the perspective of his shoulders between her legs, a study on how he bit his bottom lip when he reached his peak and he—

Oliver appeared in the doorway to her studio, and for a moment, she thought she was having a vision conjured from her wicked thoughts, but then he gave her a small bow, and she realized he was very much real.

“The footman had said you were here. I told him I would show myself in. I hope you don’t mind,” he said.

“No, of course not. Please come in.”

As he entered her studio, she tried not to make it too obvious that she was appreciating the way his body moved. It was powerful, all those muscles flexing, muscles she
