ALAINA REYNOLDS

Together we decorated the rest of my home with everything we could find until the pizza arrived later in the night.

“And it’s past time for me to head home.”

I rose on my elbows to watch Danny gather his things. It was on the tip of my tongue to ask him to stay, but I hesitated.

“What are you doing tomorrow?” He casually asked the question while leaning over me on the couch.

I’d hoped he meant it when he said he wanted to spend more time with me, but I hadn’t known how much until that second. Please don’t use me, hurt me, shatter what’s left of my heart.

“Nothing. I don’t return to work until Sunday.”

“Will you join me for dinner and a movie?”

I hadn’t been to the theatre in a long time. “What’s playing?”

“A Christmas movie.”

“Of course. Okay. What time?”

“I’ll pick you up close to five.”

“Is this a date?”

“Two friends enjoying each other’s company.”

With that, Danny kissed me one more time and petted my cat. I followed him to the front door. “Danny?”

He turned at the question in my voice, but I couldn’t say what I wanted to say, and instead, “Thank you,” popped out.

“Nothing to thank me for. Tomorrow.”

“I’m so lame,” I whispered to the windowpane and dropped my forehead against the cold glass, watching him leave when I really wanted him to stay.
