MORNING

I noticed something this morning as I passed by a flower on my favorite bike path.

What seemed void of any evidence of possibility yesterday was suddenly stirring with life today. A small flower had broken through the impossibly hard asphalt and bloomed with glorious color.

I needed to see this today. I needed to notice this reality. It was like God Himself stopped me in my tracks to see this and teach me something.

In my heart, I know God often does His most powerful work in the unseen places. But when I’m waiting to see Him move in a painful family situation I’m dealing with or a prayer request I’ve continued to cry out about, the mystery around His unseen activity feels cruel, not loving.

But here’s what that little blooming flower reminded me today about God: whatever He touches, He transforms. An apparent dead place is not beyond the reach of our life-giving God. Just when we’re ready to call it quits, God shows up. Just when a situation looks like it’s over, God intervenes. Just when something looks too far gone with what we can perceive with our own eyes, God resurrects what looks beyond repair. And just when we acknowledge that some things really do die, God brings purpose from that pain.

God may not give us eyes to see what He’s doing in the unseen places. But I believe He’ll give us hearts to trust Him.

To trust that He hears our prayers even when they haven’t been answered yet in the way we thought the answer would come.

To trust that He’s still good even when hurtful situations seem pointless and never-ending.

To trust that He has good plans for our lives even though our futures feel uncertain, scary, and confusing.

Just when we’re ready to name something dead, I can hear God saying, Not until I say so. This is part of the story, but it isn’t the full story.
