Chapter Nine

Emma woke to the smell of bacon and coffee. Dragging herself out of bed, she stopped in the bathroom on her way downstairs, where she found her mom at the kitchen counter whisking eggs.

“Hi, sweetie. You sleep okay?”

“Morning.” Emma snagged a slice of bacon and hugged her mom. “I tossed and turned a bit before finally falling asleep. You?”

Her mom placed the plate of bacon in the oven to stay warm. “Same.”

“Ty here?”

“He went out for his usual run. Should be back soon. You hungry?”

Her mom added diced potatoes and onion to a skillet before giving them a flip to coat them in the oil she’d already added. If it was up to Emma, she’d grab coffee and a yogurt for breakfast, but the smell of her mom’s cooking made her stomach growl. “I could eat.”

She reached for the coffee pot and poured herself a large mug. After stirring in creamer and sugar, she inhaled deeply before taking a sip. Opening the back door, she made her way across the enclosed porch to stare at the vast yard. The large stone patio had been built by her grandfather over forty years ago. While the outdoor furniture had been updated since Samantha, the patio needed to be redone.

A stone pathway led to the rear of the yard, where her grandmother’s rose garden sat behind an arbor that had seen better days. Emma had dreamt of fixing up and expanding what her grandmother had started.

She had the perfect vision, complete with what types of roses she wanted to add. Grabbing a notepad and pencil, she stepped outside and settled into a cushioned chair. Even though she had plenty of drawings of the garden, she drew a rough sketch of the rest of the yard, including a crude rendition of a newly renovated enclosed porch, an expanded patio, and even an area for a hot tub. There was enough space for a pool, too, if they wanted.

There was much to be done inside the house as well. Her grandparents had expanded and redone the kitchen twenty-five or so years ago, but now it seemed outdated with its dark wooden cabinets. Every room needed to be painted, floors sanded and restained, and the bathrooms needed a complete overhaul. And due to the sea air, the outside color of the house had faded and needed repainting.

Projects Emma and Ty intended to tackle, but life got in the way. Ty’s business kept him busy, as did her work at Shore Treasures and overseeing operations at Erickson Arcade. And with the foundation…maybe one day.

“Hey, Em,” Tyler called from the house. “Breakfast’s ready.”

Grabbing the notepad, she made her way inside, where Ty was carrying a plate heaping with eggs, three slices of bacon, and a slice of buttered toast to the table.

“Eating for two?” she asked with a laugh.

“Feels like I need to,” Ty said, and took a long swig of orange juice.

“Your brother’s been running with Jason and Connor in the morning,” their mother said.

It explained how Jason kept himself in shape.
