“Are you hurt?” David checked my body before I could answer.

My thoughts were fuzzy. A reaction to the explosion? I let David inspect me for injuries. I didn’t feel any pain, but shock can do weird things to you, and maybe I had a broken rib or a bleeding wound that I didn’t register yet.

“She’s not harmed,” David said.

I looked up as Andy joined us. “Did you get her?” If this had all been for nothing, I was going to... I don’t know what.

“No,” Andy said. “She had us focused on you, and a potential explosion. By the time we got to the street she was nowhere in sight.”

Either she had a car running all that time, or she hadn’t left right away. Hiding behind a car would be pretty simple. It didn’t matter because if she did hide to wait out the search, she’d be gone by now.

“Did you catch anything she said?” A headache started to throb at my temples.

“She jammed us,” David said. “She knew exactly what we would do.”

“I’ll find out who gave her the intel to do that, and they’ll end up paying for it,” Andy said.

If the RCMP had a leak, we’d never catch Viper. Let alone Kuznetsov. I tried to think who would have enough information and wasn’t on our list of most trusted. But my thoughts still fragmented like light through a prism. “Where was the bomb?” Maybe close enough for a concussion? The only thing I could think of to explain the fuzziness.

“Too far away to do any damage,” Andy said. “She didn’t intend to hurt anyone. Just a distraction.”

I blinked and tried to focus my thoughts. Definitely something wrong because things were getting weird. I told David what was happening to me.

He turned my head to face him. “Did she touch you?”

“No.” The spray? Something in it to muddle me? It didn’t make sense that she would booby trap me if she wanted a lifeline. Had she lied about calling me?

I saw Andy waving to someone and tried to look, but I felt woozy. No, the trees were walking away, and I somehow thought that was a good idea.

Someone touched my hand. “What are you experiencing?” A woman’s voice, sounding like a piano, all tinkly and in tune.

“The park is going blue,” I said because no one else seemed to be noticing. “The trees are leaving, but more are replacing them — the new ones are rainbow striped. And there’s a fairy sitting on your shoulder. Is she heavy?”

I didn’t pay attention to the answer or any of the words around me because they were purple and tasted like banana.

“How about now?” the woman said again. This time I looked at her. Normal woman. Blond hair tied back. Wearing ambulance attendant gear.

My hand hurt. “Less weird. What happened?”

“Did she give you anything?” David asked.

“Phone.” I went to take it out of my pocket, but David grabbed my hand.

“She dosed you with something. Everything is fine. Let someone with gloves take the phone.
