Our next classes were completely disrupted. While the city emptied itself of people unable or unwilling to fight, we prepared for the battles to come. Rava, furious and protective of his students, declared that he would rather sacrifice his left leg to the demons than let us near the tower again. But sadly, he had no say in the matter.

Our main homework now was training.

For the last two days, Rava had observed our practice and given tips, suggestions, and lectures. All depending on performance. We were scheduled to go into the seventh floor the next day, and Rava was determined to prepare us as much as possible.

Jam yelped as the huge man tossed her off her feet for the tenth time today. She rolled to a stand, clutching her shoulder and sporting a nasty snarl.

Ash crossed her arms and tapped her foot impatiently. “Kalanth, just because she’s tiny—”

“— doesn’t mean I shouldn’t know she’s there. I know, I know!” the bear demi huffed, plopping on his ass in the middle of the training yard. The sun set behind his burly, drooping shoulders.

Jam, lips tight with displeasure, strode over to me. “We can’t focus on teamwork if only some people care about other members.”

Caz snorted. “Stuff it, kitty cat. Just because he’s three times your size doesn’t mean he doesn’t care. He’s doing his best!”

“‘Doing his best’ isn’t going to cut it if we’re positioned anywhere near each other in the tower,” she argued. “What if he knocks me straight into a damn dragon’s mouth?”

I listened to the girls bicker. Both had a point, but Jam’s was stronger. Kalanth wasn’t bumping her on purpose, but with great strength comes even greater need for spatial awareness. This was one of those situations where the bear demi might benefit from some kind of equipment that helped him with the problem until he could naturally become aware of it.

I said, “Kalanth, you’re used to fighting beside more formidably sized warriors. Maybe we can make this training effective for both you and Jam.”

He brightened. “Yes! Anything!”

“What do you hate doing the most?”

“Cleaning,” he said, shuddering. His kind eyes took on an almost traumatized depth. “My mother made me clean everything in the house. She was awful.” Then he stared at my widening smile. “Wait a minute…”

“Excellent! Every time you bump into Jam, you have to clean one of the Night Owl bathrooms—starting with ours, of course. If you throw Jam off her feet, you have to clean an entire suite. Starting with ours, obviously. Which is perfect, because Caz is an absolute hurricane of clothing, and Clove leaves a small lake in the bathroom when she’s done bathing. They’re hopeless.”

Kalanth went pale. “Um… I’m not sure.”

“I agree,” Jam declared, a little spitefully. She rubbed an increasingly puffy bruise on her cheek. “It’s a perfect deal.”

My shrug said it all. Training always battered people up. But I couldn’t help but desire a small bit of revenge after seeing Jam get hurt unnecessarily. If this scared Kalanth enough, then it was the mode of his growth.
