Mattie put on her headphones and began her leisurely stroll back home through the deserted Sub. She wondered if her parents would be back or if they were still at Mayor Sullivan’s house. Mayor Sullivan’s house. With Wade. And Lacey. Wade and Lacey had been together all afternoon. They might even be together now. She found herself wondering if Wade thought about her when he was with Lacey, or did he just allow himself to be consumed by Lacey’s beauty and charm? Of course he did. What man could resist Lacey? Besides, Mattie had made it very clear to Wade that she didn’t want to be his mate. He was free to do what he wanted and Mattie was free to do what she wanted. Still, the thought of Wade and Lacey together troubled her. The thought of Wade with anyone troubled her.

Mattie didn’t hear the footsteps behind her until it was too late. A pair of strong arms wrapped around her, pinning her arms to her sides. Instinctively, Mattie threw her head back into her assailant’s face. He swore and loosened his grip on her. Mattie tried to run away but another pair of hands grabbed her hair and pulled her back. She lost her footing and fell to the ground.

“Well, look at that,” said an unfamiliar voice. “We’ve got ourselves a pretty one.”

Mattie looked up at her attackers. They both wore hoods and balaclavas. The one she’d head butted lifted his mask up a little. Blood was gushing from his nose. He wiped his nose with his hand and then snarled at Mattie.

“You nasty little dog.”

He kicked Mattie in the ribs. She gasped and tried to crawl away but the man with the bloody nose grabbed her foot and dragged her back towards him. He wrapped his arms around her neck and began to squeeze tightly, cutting off the flow of blood and air. Mattie flailed hopelessly. Her vision became blurred and darkness closed in as the life left her body.
