CHAPTER 5

After a couple of weeks, I felt the urge to tell him the truth. I knew he loved me as much as I did and living with that thought was screwing up my mind, so after chewing on it for days, I decided to take the plunge.

“Nick there’s something I need to tell you,” I said while he was working on his laptop.

He looked up. “Yeah go for it.”

“I can’t be with you if you don’t know who I really am. I’ll feel guilty for the rest of my life. Perhaps you’ll yell at me and leave me for good. Perhaps you’ll be disgusted by that. But I love you and I swear, now I am what you see. I am Kendra. I am the girl who you had sex with and you know I am a girl.”

He looked at me with a stunned expression and gave me a quizzical gaze. “What do you mean honey?”

I exhaled and I chuckled. “You probably won’t even believe me but I need to free my conscience. I want you to love me knowing who I once was.”

He shook his head chuckling. “You are telling me you were a prostitute?”

I giggled sucking the tip of my thumb. “Nooo!” I squealed.

“Then what?” He promoted me.

My heart was going crazy. “I’m Daniel,” I said and cleared my throat. “Well, I was Daniel.”

He widened his eyes and stared at me for a couple of seconds; then he chuckled. “What are you talking about?”

I grumbled. “It’s a long story,” I told him what happened briefly, all in one breath, and he kept staring at me without replying. The tension was palpable and a dramatic silence filled the room.

“Ok, it’s enough,” he said. “I don’t know what kind of joke this is, but I start suspecting this has been a whole big prank. You don’t fucking play with love guys! This is stupid. Damn Kendra, I fell for ya. You are the first girl I really loved and who I want to spend my life with and now you come up with this bullshit?”

I knew he might have reacted that way and I couldn’t blame him. I slowly shook my head while I bit my thumbnail thoughtfully. “I knew you wouldn’t believe me, but at least I told you.”

“Really?” he said sarcastically. “How the hell am I supposed to believe you? And my God, if it was true it’d be disgusting!” He said widening his eyes and throbbing his head.

“How so? I mean yeah, knowing I was your best friend it’s kinda weird I admit it. But I’m a girl now! You understand that? The only thing I got left from Daniel is my memories!”

“Kendra please stop it, you start getting on my nerves.”

“But Nick I swear to-”

“If you were Daniel why didn’t you tell your parents so they would tell the police to stop looking for you and they’ll be relieved. Daniel’s mom called the day after he vanished. She was drained by crying and worried as
