CHAPTER 30

Friday, September 20

My alarm went off at 4 AM, waking me from an erotic dream of Patty and I entwined in lovemaking. Waking Rudy was harder than I anticipated. But finally he was up and dressed.

Before leaving, I gave Rudy Professor Maria Cornell’s name. He might come up with something I hadn’t found.

At the terminal, I said, “You be good. Stay out of trouble.”

“Yes, Boss. See you tomorrow night.”

Despite my not being happy with the flight schedule, the trip turned out to be uneventful, partly due to having aisle seats and downing a few beers. Hertz had my car ready, and the hotel was able to give me early check-in. I texted Mr. Ushers to say I had arrived, and we agreed to meet at 2 PM.

Following the directions he’d texted, I pulled up in front of an impressive home. As I was walking up to the front door, it opened, and out stepped a tall, older gentleman, with blue eyes, white hair and mustache, wearing shorts and a green T-shirt.

“You must be Ludefance.” He extended his right hand and gave me a firm handshake. His broad smile revealed pearly white teeth.

“That’s me.”

“I recognized you from your scar. Combat wound?”

“No, Sir. Tangling with alligators.”

“Ohh, yes. Yes. I did read that somewhere.”

“You must have Googled me.”

“That I did. But not Google. I’ve learned to research people now. In my position, I have to know who I’m dealing with. I’ve found a background check website. Quite reliable. You live in a high-rise on Santa Rosaria Beach, Florida.”

“Then I’m afraid you have the advantage.”

“Perhaps. Quite interesting background. I’ve read about all your cases. Mighty impressive. So, do come in.”

He led the way into his office with a large desk and leather chair, three computers, and numerous diplomas displayed on the walls.

He pulled up another leather chair. “Please sit, Ludefance. Since I know a bit about you, I will fill you in on me. Retired, recently finalized my divorce, two grown children, six grandchildren and counting.”

“That’s quite a family, Sir. And, I do appreciate your seeing me, Mr. Ushers.”

“So, you say Pachua is dead? How did that happen? He was just a young man.”

“Officially, asphyxia.”

“Officially?”

“The rest of it isn’t a pretty tale, so I prefer to leave it at that.”

“I understand. How can I be of help?”

“You can start from the beginning with how you were acquainted with him.”

“I only met him once at a fundraiser for Bakersfield University back in spring of 2015 when he taught there. I’m an alumnus and try to keep involved with my alma matter. We had quite an interesting and involved conversation. But it was the girl he was working with, Aaliyah Konuku, who I dealt with regarding investments. I think she was from Hawaii. Very unusual girl.”

“How so, Sir?”

“A very smart, beautiful girl and she knew it. Because of that she could be very persuasive. She called me not long after the fundraiser, mentioning Pachua’s name. She wanted me to take advantage of investing in Bitcoin, promising high returns.
