CHAPTER SEVEN

Mary had worried over which movie to pick for Saturday’s date all through the first part of the week. After not being able to decide what she thought Jackie would like, she called Jackie to ask her what she would prefer to see. They decided to go see a mystery thriller at the eight o’clock show, and they were going to go to a Japanese restaurant a few blocks from the theater at six.

Their phone conversation had lasted almost two hours. They talked about the kind of books, movies, and food that they liked. Mary was very surprised that they had so much in common. She had nothing in common with those other professional women that she had been with, other than they were closeted lesbians.

After their conversation on Wednesday, Mary had been tempted to call Jackie on Thursday night, just to talk. When was the last time she had met a woman that she just wanted to talk to? She couldn’t remember. It was funny that their relationship had started out sexual, but now seemed to be moving toward a romantic one. It seemed a little backwards, but the reality was that she wouldn’t have gone out with Jackie if she had asked her out on a date to start with.

By Friday afternoon, Mary was getting nervous about the date. She had no idea why. They had been to dinner together and it went fine. They’d had sex several times now, and that was fabulous. Maybe, it was because she was afraid that she was reading more into Jackie’s intentions than she should be. What if Jackie wasn’t looking for a relationship? What if she just wanted to keep things on a sexual level and nothing else? Mary would keep it that way if that was the way it had to be because the sex was phenomenal, but she wanted it to be more. That part really surprised her. She hadn’t wanted a relationship for years and now, this woman had turned her world upside down.

She wanted to know everything there was to know about Jackie. She wondered if Jackie’s parents had abandoned her the way hers had. Did Jackie want to get married or have children? She found herself wondering these kinds of things all day long. She had never spent this much time thinking about a woman before. No one had ever captured her imagination the way Jackie had.

Saturday drug by, minutes felt like hours. But, when it finally started getting close to time to go, the time flew. She couldn’t decide what to wear. She’d put jeans on, changed into slacks, and then back to jeans. She put on a t-shirt, and then a dress blouse, and finally settled on a long-sleeved, button-down shirt. She couldn’t decide if she should wear tennis shoes, loafers, or boots.

That’s how Ashley found her at five-fifteen. “What are you doing?” Ashley asked when she stopped at Mary’s door and saw her staring at her shoes.

“I can’t decide which shoes to wear.
