Trimming edges
Streak of Lightning Borders
This border looks very much like the ribbon borders, but this technique gives you the opportunity to use many different fabrics along the triangle edge, as each triangle can be cut and positioned individually, unlike the strip methods that repeat the same fabric.
Refer back to Twisted Ribbon Borders and use the formula to figure out the size of the triangle and the strip that are needed to make your border size of choice. You will only need the first few steps for this technique.
Once you have determined the unitsâ sizes, cut the triangles and the strips from as many different fabrics as you plan to use.
Note
The issue of grainline needs to be addressed here. There are two ways of cutting the triangles for this quilt. One is to cut a square in half diagonally, which will result in a long bias edge on the edge of the border. Alternatively, you can cut a larger square into quarters, winding up with all the long triangle sides on the straight grain. Both methods can be defended.
If you need to ease or stretch the border minimally to make everything fit exactly, cutting on the bias would be helpful. As long as you are using starch every step of the way, the bias can be managed without a lot of trouble. Bias is easier to ease and work with when fitting than straight grain.
