CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

June

Marshall took the bow of the small rowboat and pulled as Tye did his best to keep up, pushing with all of his (much lesser) might against the flat stern, the calm, dark blue-green water of Hood Canal several yards behind him.

“Ow!”

Marshall looked over his shoulder. Tye waved his right hand up and down as his face changed to a tight grimace.

The teenager swore and kicked the side of the weathered boat, then reared back for another.

“Tye! Stop!”

The boy glared as he stopped short. “I get a splinter every time I touch this stupid piece of crap!”

“This ‘stupid piece of crap’ keeps all of us fed. We’re doggone lucky it’s still in one piece after the tsunami and I don’t believe I need to spell out what’ll happen if you go and finish the job.” Marshall paused, rubbing his temples. “Now look, Tye. I’ve seen plenty of angry young men in my life. The Marines did a bang-up job collecting them from all over the place. Maybe—just maybe—I’m speaking from personal experience. So why don’t you do us both a favor and tell me where all of this pent-up rage comes from, huh?”

Tye turned away. “I’m fine. Let’s go.”

“No, I’m serious now. Spit it out. Let’s get this dealt with. And don’t lie and say it’s nothing.”

The boy hung his head. “You really want to know what’s buggin’ me?”

“I think I’ve made that pretty clear, yeah.”

“I already told you I’m the only one left out of my group. They’re all dead. And I’m still here.”

Marshall shrugged. “You shouldn’t feel guilty about that, son. Every one of us has lost people we care about.”

“No, I should. Us getting caught. . .it was my fault.”

Marshall crossed his arms, waiting for Tye to continue.

“It was one of those creepy zombie people. I know you guys had that run in with them too, so you know what I mean. I was out scavenging and one of them saw me. Looked right at me. I knew I should have gone to hide somewhere for a day or two. But I got scared and ran right back to our hideout. Acted like nothing happened.” Tye paused for several seconds, looking out over the water toward the far shore just a few miles away. “They came for us the next morning.”

Tye turned to Marshall, faced tied up tight once again. “Tell me, how is that fair? I thought God was just? It’s. . .it’s like He’s keeping me here just to punish me!”

“I’ve got some bad news for you, Tye. He kept all of us here as punishment. It ain’t just you.”

The boy chuckled in derision. “You think that’s gonna help?”

“It’s not meant to. Look. I’m not the expert on making people feel good about themselves, all right? You want those types, they’re all back up at the lake. What I will say is that God isn’t fair. Had plenty of time to make my way cover to cover through the Bible more than once over the last couple of years, and I didn’t see fair pop up a whole lot.
