CHAPTER ELEVEN

A HEROINE FOR HALLOWEEN

MISS NORVIA NELSON REQUESTS THE PLEASURE OF YOUR ATTENDANCE AT HER HALLOWEEN PARTY ON THE EERIE NIGHT OF OCTOBER 31, 1914, AT HALF PAST SEVEN. PREPARE TO HAVE YOUR FORTUNE FORETOLD BY A GREAT CLAIRVOYANT, WITH GAMES TO FOLLOW.

“It sounds so wonderfully frightening!” Dicta shivered. “It’s really too bad we don’t have a black cat.” Her eyes lit up. “Ooh, I know! Valentine has a white cat. We could stick him in the fireplace, and he can get all sooty!”

“No black cats,” Norvia said immediately.

Dicta spun in a crazed circle. “If you’re going to be a fancy French fortune-teller, you need a cape.”

Norvia thought about this. “I could use the fringed shawl on the piano,” she mused.

“No, you mustn’t. It was my mother’s,” said Vernon, a look of alarm flashing across his face.

They did not utilize the sacred shawl—one of Old Mary’s shawls from Beaver Island would have to do, instead—but Norvia and Dicta spent a wondrous afternoon scavenging for apples to serve, candles to place in strategic locations, and various accoutrements for their party games.

“We need a pumpkin to carve,” said Dicta, looking around the parlor as if she expected a pumpkin to walk through the door on her command.

“Elton might be able to give us some,” Norvia suggested. “I’ll go to the farm tomorrow and see if we can borrow a couple.”
