A SAFE HOMELAND FOR THE JEWS

Many times after I speak to Christian groups about my theology of the land, and about life as a Palestinian, I am asked, “But shouldn’t Jews have a safe homeland?”

This is indeed an important question. My answer is that Jews should feel safe everywhere! They should feel at home in Germany, France, the United States, and anywhere they are living. The idea that Jews won’t be safe unless they have a homeland cannot be acceptable, as it ignores the root of the problem of why they are unsafe to begin with! It is lamentable that Jews today continue to find themselves targets of attacks and as a result feel unsafe and the need to relocate to Tel Aviv or Jerusalem.

A few years ago I attended a worship service at a synagogue in Bonn, Germany. After the service, I was introduced to members of the small Jewish community there, who shared about the rich history of Judaism in Bonn, which was catastrophically nearly erased by the Holocaust. Today, very few Jews are left there, and to me this is a loss to religious and cultural diversity. The irony is that the same people who come from societies that have pushed Jews out of their midst have the audacity to accuse Palestinians of anti-Semitism and want to educate us on this topic! Let us not forget that the Zionist movement started as a response to anti-Semitism in Europe. In fact, Jews had a better life in Islamic and Arab societies, not in Western ones.

As Albert Einstein famously said, “Let us recall that in former times no people lived in greater friendship with us than the ancestors of these Arabs.”9 So if Western Christians truly believe and care for the Jews to have a safe homeland, they should begin in their own homelands!
