It is the year she imagines leaving, her trail

through snow like a graphite line across paper. Land

of the steady hand. Land where we only kill in the name

of need. To finally see the trees

for the forest, to leave nothing but a room

quivering inside a house—imagine. The raven

who hangs around both streetlights & stars teaches her

how to spell feast without fist. She doesn’t

yet know that her sisters will search all night, mouthing

her delicate name into every discarded

exoskeleton. Not once will the dead ever

wake. Still, we’ll save a side of the cup just for her

to drink from. Years of milk, years of squalor. Palaces

we’ll make of spruce boughs and tattered blue

tarp. Men will come and go like children. Children

will come and go like sandhill cranes.

She’ll be royalty somewhere—waited on, carefully

pried apart, revered. Every scar cataloged.

As she leaves, she swears she hears the raven’s last

laugh like a rusty gate.
