Gavin is not upset after lunch and continues the day like normal. That confirms that he's more interested in me helping him with his social status around here than being romantic. And it's not as if Tyler and I said we would have a make-out session.

Gia's working a long shift tonight at the Tower Market, so the house is bare and quiet when I unlock the back door and slip inside. I wave to Gavin, who backs out of the driveway, having been summoned by his father to help at the restaurant tonight. But I'm tense again for a new reason that has nothing to do with Dad. Tyler still needs to learn to be completely honest with me, and he owes me an explanation why. Then I can tell him about the Alan plan.

He knocks on the front door a few minutes later. I wonder if he's followed me at a distance all the way home, ensuring I don't die.

I answer. Tyler nods with a smile, fully in human form. Despite the state of the rose bush back at his place, he seems relaxed. Almost as if he's in denial about what's happening.

"Hey," he says, hiking up his backpack.

Every move he makes is graceful. Why does he have to be that way?

"Come on in," I say, forcing myself to sound salty.

Tyler narrows his eyes at me, turning his mouth downward. He's still hot even when doing that, and it infuriates me. "Is something wrong? I know it was awkward to ask this in front of Gavin and everyone watching."

"Gavin didn't seem upset. And you know when he's in a bad mood. You didn't tell me Alan knew who the sorceress is."

I feel like crap for doing it, but it's necessary.

Tyler slowly closes the front door behind him, letting the squeak drag out. "There was no point in that. And I'm not even sure he was telling the truth."

He sounds honest, and then doubt fills me. I move aside to allow Tyler access to the old leather couch. He sits and waits. "You should have said something, even if we just needed to rule out the idea."

Go ahead. Tell me you're trying to keep me safe. I wait as Tyler eyes the old tube TV across from him.

"Okay. So I should have said something, but Alan was doing everything he could to exert power over the rest of us when it started becoming clear that the rest of us didn't want this forever," Tyler says. "I always thought it was just manipulation. Alan didn't want to believe that the curse would turn on us eventually because he gained so much by joining the pack." He faces me.

Chaz doesn't think it was just manipulation. But I don't say it.

But I also hold onto a new hope. Tyler might not have believed that Alan really knew the answer. And judging from the shocked look on his face, he didn't.

"Did Alan tell you about the conditions before you knew the curse would worsen?" I ask.
