CHAPTER 13

Melody had taken off immediately, and I collapsed into a quiet panic. Ajay took me by the arm and led me back to the kitchen.

‘Hey, I don’t know what all that was about, but you need to sit for minute and calm down.’ He put the kettle on and made me a strong coffee. ‘Do you want to talk about it?’

I nodded. ‘You know the article I wrote about the couple finding each other?’

Ajay nodded. ‘Yeah, it was a great story. You’re a great writer.’

‘Thanks, anyway the son of the man in the story is the guy I’m seeing, and at the wedding on the weekend, his mother came up to me and introduced herself.’

Ajay tilted his head slightly as if he was trying to understand. ‘So, you hadn’t met the mother and she was at the wedding of her ex?’

I could see that the story would be confusing. ‘Sort of, yes. Basically, the mother left when Cal, the son, was only a baby, so he’s never had any contact with her. Then, she just showed up at the wedding as the videographer and tells me she’s his mother but insists I keep it secret from the son and the father.’

Ajay’s eyes widened. ‘Okay, that sounds intense. What did you do?’

I shrugged. ‘I didn’t know what to do, honestly. I couldn’t think, and I was dealing with the wedding and Mum and Uncle Mark being all secretive about their relationship.’

Ajay cocked his head to the side and his face contorted. ‘Um, reverse that back a little. What did you just say about your mum and your uncle?’

Ah, that was too long a story to explain. ‘Ignore that bit for now, I’ll explain later, but basically, I kept my mouth shut about the mother being there so it didn’t ruin everything for the couple, and for Cal, but then the evil mother went and told Cal and he was so upset he just left. He hasn’t really spoken to me since, only when his father collapsed, and he asked me to come to the hospital.’

Ajay stood up and went to the fridge. He got out some leftover pie and cut us both a piece. ‘Do you mind? I need some sugar to process all this.,’ He said.

I nodded and ate a fork full. ‘Anyway, I’ve ruined everything with Cal over this, and now his nasty mother is just trying to kick me out of his life so that she can swoop in and save him. Also, everything else is falling apart too.’ I ate another fork full. Through a loaded mouth, I added, ‘oh, and someone is stalking the Doctor Love website, vandalising the exhibit and threatening us.’

Ajay almost choked on his pie. ‘Whoa, threatening you? What the hell?’

I nodded, holding up my fork. ‘Every single thing is forked, Ajay. I’m not kidding.’

Ajay laughed and so did I, but I could see the concern in his eyes.

He put the kettle back on and made another coffee and insisted I tell him everything.
