As bodies around Aalok burned bright, Sophie scanned their faces as they flaked away. Then, in all the ashes rising to the sky, there he was. Serus. He frowned, gazing up at Sophie. First his cheeks flaked off into ash, then his forehead and chin. With each piece of tiny ash, Serusâ face turned into a pillar of grey. The flames rose higher and higher around the ashy pillar until Sophieâs eyes were filled with nothing but the brightness of the blaze.
Sophie opened her eyes, gasping for breath as Jazrael slid her hand down her chest. She pressed Sophie hard against the wall and leaned to her ear. âYou serve a king of death.â
âNow, Jazrael,â the familiar voice said sternly.
Jazrael turned swiftly and went to the barred door.
She leaned against it casually, tracing her fingers across the iron. âShe wonât believe a word you say. Even with the truth before her very eyes.â
Sophie leaned her head against the stone and squinted at the hidden figure, trying to force it into focus. She first registered his red suit jacket, then a round golden badge upon on his chest that glimmered in the fire of the sconces. As the male flipped the key ring around his finger, Sophie moved forward, inspecting the pin more closely.
The gold engraved pin barred a perplexing emblem. At first glance, it looked like an owl. The wingsâ tips were down and the crown was pointed, hovering over the âA.â Sophie tilted her head, realizing it was her kingâs emblem, upside down. This was a symbol of the rebellion, a symbol of treachery. Aalokâs signet.
The male with the keys stepped into the light and Sophieâs eyes drifted from the medallion to his stormy blue-gray eyes.
âHello, gorgeous,â Serus said with a charming smile.
âSerus...â Sophie exhaled, her shoulders slumping.
Serus slid his hands into his pockets, giving a sideways smirk. His gaze traveled from her bloodshot eyes to the hem of her sooty dress and then back up to her confused stare.
âSheâs still yapping about dying as if itâs a privilege.â Jazrael rolled her eyes in disgust, crossing her arms.
âIs she now?â Serus asked, keeping his eyes locked on Sophieâs.
âShe doesnât look very happy to see you,â Jazrael observed with interest. She glanced over her shoulder at Sophie then back at Serus. âI thought for sure from what you said that she would have rushed into your arms at the sight of you.
Maybe she doesnât love you as much as you thought.â Jazrael pursed her lips, sliding a hand over Serusâ shoulder. She glared back at Sophie with a taunting grin and left the cell.
As Jazraelâs heels clattered down the hall, Serus relaxed his shoulders and offered a hand. âLetâs get you cleaned up, shall we?â
âNo,â Sophie shook her head.
âPlease?â Serus frowned, taking a step forward.
Sophie stared at Serus a long moment. In those pleading gray-blue eyes was a mix of relief and sadness, pain and longing. The flash of his face in the vision filled her mind. His eyes had been pleading with her, just as they were pleading now.
