Mëira

Her golden eyes slowly adjusted to the light. Its rays of bright gold filtered through the trees, falling on the shoulders of a tall creature standing above her. From reading his mind’s presence, she could tell the creature was a male. His shocked expression stretched across his handsome face. She couldn’t help but notice he had pointed ears sticking out from beneath his long brown hair.

He was slender in form but muscular. Staring into his sky-blue eyes, she stepped closer to get a better scent. Sticking her nose out, she smelled the sweet aroma of flowers, grass, and could that be water?

“I believe you are the one I have been waiting for!” she squealed in delight.

Her mind connected with his for a moment as she sensed his surprise. In a leap she was on him, climbing her way up his legs and torso before resting nicely on his shoulder. She stretched out her neck to look deep into his eyes as the sweet sound of laughter escaped his fair mouth.

“Nice to meet you, too, my curious friend.”

He raised his hand to stroke her jaw. A penetrating light burst forth at his touch. His mouth fell open as a strange sensation took hold of them both. She didn’t know what was happening, but it felt like her soul was becoming more. Her spirit grew, expanding beyond herself. She watched in wonder as their inner beings joined together to become one. Even her mind opened to him and his thoughts, memories, and emotions filtered through. It all happened in a blink of an eye. When he removed his hand, a golden dragon insignia stretched up his forearm. It rested right below his elbow and curved down to his wrist. Both their eyes stared at it in shock. Neither of them knew what it meant really, but she knew that she would never be alone again.

“What just happened?” he asked, bewildered.

She crawled down onto his arm, then reached over to sniff the mark.

“I’m not entirely sure myself.”

He raised her up and looked her straight in the eye.

“Did you just mind speech with me?”

She nodded her head in acknowledgement.

“This just gets weirder and weirder. What was that light? Why am I hearing your voice inside my head with my protective wards still in place?”

This creature sure likes to ask questions, she mused. His eyes narrowed slightly while looking at her.

“I heard that!”

She laughed in surprise. This was bizarre—only a few days ago she’d been alone, but now her mind was connected with another. And it was apparent that neither of them understood what was going on. A breeze filtered through the trees, carrying the familiar scent of rose blossoms. She felt the presence before she even spoke. They were no longer alone.

“I told you he would come for you soon, little dragon.”

The male creature side stepped, turning his head about to look for the source of the voice. I need to remember to ask him what exactly he is.

“I’m an elf,” he said in swift reply.
