It took ten minutes to find Mark’s email address, but over an hour to write to him. I’d no idea what kind of person I was talking to, though I’d seen a photo of him on Facebook.

Blond hair. I never expected that; he was so dark when he was born. I traced the square jaw and one-sided smile of the stranger onscreen with my finger, not knowing how to feel; trying to reconcile this handsome young man with the baby I’d brought wriggling into the world. Yet that smile stirred a memory I couldn’t quite pin down.

I didn’t have a single childhood photo of Mark: part of the agreement I’d made with my aunt and uncle that I would never try to contact him. I realised now that they had no right to extract such a promise from me, but at the time I’d been so overwhelmed with pain and guilt, I’d accepted the ‘clean break’ as the best option: for my baby, anyway. And later on, the gap of time had made it easier to convince myself that I’d done the right thing. There were only a few photos on the Facebook page of him with university friends and one with a girl on a beach. I raked my mind for a suitable opening.
