He stubbed out his cigar and slumped against the hall table. His brother likely dashed to the telegraph office, unhappy about their mother’s passing while at the same time delighted to stir up trouble. He had expected his mother to pass and so the news felt more like a sigh than a gasp. Though he’d miss his mother, she’d been ill for over a year. He had said his good-byes during their last visit.

Once Stillman set down the telegram, he opened the mysterious note. He read the neat script and a chill ran down his neck. Oscar Fitzwater, the stonemasons union leader, wanted a meeting. The stonemasons were strong and united by a man people called an autocratic dictator. Though never charged, police suspected Fitzwater in several irregular murders. Stillman didn’t know why a man like Fitzwater wanted to see him, but a tyrant not only knew where he lived, the note was a summons, not a request. Stillman hurried to the kitchen and locked the back door. Stillman rubbed his forehead, then steadied himself on the kitchen stool. He had to decide which to do first. Leaving the city in the middle of the fight to take care of family problems seemed impossible, and yet Stillman thought of Littlemore and the ramifications of a scandal. His brother might exaggerate, but could he take a chance? Maybe he could stall Fitzwater, but he didn’t know if a man like Fitzwater would accept a delay. Oscar Fitzwater, a suspected murderer and union boss, not only wanted to talk; he demanded they meet someplace private.
