Chapter 27

Milo scrolls down my phone. “Which do you like best? Indoor skating rinks, gun shows, or county fairs?”

“I don’t like any of those things.” I continue to peruse the snack aisle of the gas station, hunting for an early dinner. It’s only five o’clock, but the bland potato’s worn off, and I haven’t seen any restaurants in Middle of Nowhere, Wyoming. “What’s the most times you’ve masturbated in a twenty-four-hour period?”

“Six.” He picks up a large fountain cup, then swaps it for the jumbo size. “That’s not my answer. That’s the sixth time you’ve sexualized me.” He shrugs. “Actually, it might be my answer.”

“Makes sense since you’ve pretty much only had sex four times.”

“Mine’s two,” Brad-Paul unsolicitedly offers as he searches a row of protein bars for one he’s not allergic to.

Two isn’t surprising. He has the sex drive of a Tibetan monk.

Milo talks over the sound of ice cubes tumbling into his cup. “Skating. Guns. Fair. If you don’t pick one, Lexa will probably find Havarti to Heaven.”

“Fine. The fair. Bright lights. Lots of children.” No chance of having fun there.

The soon-to-be-spectral bulimic grabs two more bags of Donettes. “God, you’re a pain in the ass. Is there anything you do like?”

“Shoe hoarding,” Brad-Paul answers for me.

Milo predictably presses his cup against the Dr. Pepper lever. “Do you want to go find a shoe to look at?”

“No thanks. I’ll just look at the pair you didn’t sell on Craigslist.” I extend one foot, displaying my sneaker. I could look at my stripper boots, too, but that’d require a trip to the trunk.

Milo grabs a plastic lid while his cup fills. “So what else does she like, Paul?”

Brad-Paul compares two protein bar wrappers side-by-side. The pictures, not the ingredients. “She likes books. She says fake people are more interesting than real ones.”

It’s a poignant statement, but not the one I made. The real one was closer to “Shut up. I’m reading.”

“You sold them all for a dollar,” I remind Milo.

He points his plastic lid at a tabloid magazine. “Want to read about Martians taking over the White House?”

Back from the restroom, Lexa joins Brad-Paul by the protein bars. “Are any of these vegan?”

Brad-Paul hands her a nuts-and-berries bar. “Guess what, Lexi! We’re going to a fair! Where’s it at, M-Dawg?”

Milo seals the lid on his Dr. Pepper. “A couple hours east of here.”

I have no idea where the hell we are, but “east” means “to the right,” so there’s a decent chance we’re heading in the right direction.

Milo shows Brad-Paul a map on my phone.

“Hey! That’s near where Lexi’s parents live!”

How the hell does he know that? They’ve only known each other three days. I dated him for six months, and I have no idea where he’s from. Kentucky, maybe? He has the demeanor of a Kentucky person. No accent though.

Lexa checks out the map. “It’s sort of close. They’re a couple hours from there. Just outside Rawlins.”

Brad-Paul grins. “I’ll pick that for my turn if you want to see them.
