The backyard ice glimmered blue under the stars. Frank’s dad had turned on the floodlight to press back the darkness. Frank flipped the puck over to Calvin as soon as he saw him. Without thinking, Calvin sent it spinning back.

“Was I right?” Frank called. “You were lying on your bed?” He started carrying the puck toward the net.

“Yeah, and feeling like a squashed bug,” Calvin replied. He faked right and dove for the puck. “I basically lost today for us.”

He sighed. Now the Blades had to win the next game to make it into the championship round.

Frank grinned. “Can’t argue with you there.”

“Thanks a lot!” Calvin said. He shot, and Frank blocked it. “I thought you were my best friend.”

“Don’t best friends tell each other the truth? Change zones,” Frank said. They skated to opposite sides of the rink. “I know something is wrong. And it’s not just the pressure from the tournament. So talk to me.”

Calvin focused on his stick. He gently tapped the puck back and forth. “It’s hard to say.”

Frank dashed up beside him and stole the puck. “I get it. But, dude, you’ve been super off. Today, you looked like you were going to be sick on the ice. You’ve hardly been talking to the other guys. We’ve got to figure this out.”

Calvin sighed. He gazed up at the pines. “Okay, so you know the first tournament game? This guy, he started chirping. Calling me short and stuff. Then there was that dirty check…”

Calvin trailed off as he skated in a wide circle. Frank waited.
