CHAPTER 11

Mum and Dad returned holding hands and laughing and joking with each other as they spoke quietly. They often shared little jokes and were always rather handsy with each other. I'd always find them whispering like kids and Dad guffawing at their private jokes like they were newlyweds, not seasoned veterans of the ups and downs of marriage.

"They're so sweet," said Min with a wistful sigh as we watched them approach.

"They've been together so long, but still love each other so much."

"Max, do you think that we could ever… No, sorry, forget it."

"Hey, it's alright. I get it. And yes, I do think we will."

"A year at least, remember? I want at least a year to rediscover myself and learn what it's like to be Min, not Max and Min. To do what I want, go where I want, not answer to anyone. To make sure you're really who you seem to be now, not an impostor."

"And I told you already, we have all the time in the world. There's no pressure, and I'm not pushing for anything, but you have to admit, for a woman trying to distance herself from her ex, you sure do spend a lot of time with me. One day, Min. You lasted one day then came with my folks to check out what I was up to."

"That was only because I didn't think it was real. I couldn't picture you out here in your campervan, so had to come see for myself. Make it real, if you get what I mean." Min smiled, bashful at my teasing.

"Again, I get it. I'm happy to have you here whenever you want, and so is Anxious."

Anxious barked his agreement.

"What's for breakfast, Son? I'm famished." Dad studied the prep area, nodding in satisfaction as he spied the makings of an epic fry-up.

"You need to watch your weight," warned Mum. "I don't want you getting a fat belly. There's nothing worse than a chubby rocker with a tucked-in white T-shirt."

Dad patted his perfectly flat stomach and said, "No fear of that. We've got dancing tonight, remember? So I can eat all I want today and burn it off later."

"We can't leave today!" declared Mum, aghast.

"Why not?"

"Because of these two." Mum pointed at me and Min like she could have been talking about anyone.

"What about them?" asked Dad, eyes switching between sausages and Mum.

"Yes, what about us?" I asked.

"They need looking after. Max here keeps getting involved in all these murders, but this time we're here to look after him. Silly boy." Mum wagged a finger at me.

Dad shook his head and shrugged, as if saying, what could you do?

"I don't need you to look out for me. I'm a capable man who just so happens to have helped figure out why people have been getting killed. I do fine on my own, thank you very much."

"Yes, until you don't. Then it will be his fault." Mum glared at Dad, daring him to disagree.

"You daft spotty lump," grumbled Dad. "He's a grown-up with his own life.
