Caput XVI: Suspects?
'Good God,' Baldwyn breathed and stood as still as a rock.
Hermitage and Wat stepped up to the door.
âOh, my,â Hermitage said as he saw the prone figure in the middle of the space.
âAdelâs boy?â Wat asked.
Baldwyn could only nod.
âLooks like your seneschal was right to be suspicious.â
âWho would do this?â Baldwyn asked in genuine shock. âNo one does this. We donât do this. There are no murders on Gernesey.â He seemed to come to his senses. âWell, there was that one time, but that was as much an accident as anything. But not this. Not a young lad.â
There could be no doubt that Adelâs boy was dead, nor that it was murder. The knife being the main clue.
Baldwyn was clearly in no state to examine the situation, and so Hermitage stepped forward. Wat and Cwen followed while Egland stood outside looking glumly at the crystal waters glinting in the sun.
âThatâs quite a knife.â Wat observed the weapon in its final resting place, which was also the ladâs final resting place.
âHeâs been gone for some time,â Hermitage observed as he knelt and considered the state of the body.
âThat sounds about right,â Cwen agreed as she held a hand over her nose.
âIt has to be connected, doesnât it?â Wat said. âFirst Adel and now her lad. For an island where they donât have murder, theyâre doing pretty well.â
âWe shall have to get the brothers to attend to the poor soul,â Hermitage said. âAnd quite soon, I think.â
Cwen stood and went to the door. âEgland,â she called to the boy who was now kicking stones on the beach. âGo and fetch a monk.â
âWhat?â the apprentice replied in a surly manner that he would never have used in the workshop.
âGo and fetch a monk.â
âFetch a monk?â Egland queried. âBut youâve already got one.â
âNot Hermitage. One of the locals. Just go.â
âHe wonât understand me,â Egland pointed out. âWhat with me not speaking the language.â
âI donât care how you do it. Jump up and down, wave your arms, just get a monk. Thereâs a body to be dealt with.â
Eglandâs sigh could be heard across the shore, but he slumped off in the right direction.
âThat boy is lucky Iâm feeling sorry for him,â Cwen said as she came back.
Hermitage hadnât noticed her feeling sorry for him, so he doubted Egland was aware of the sympathy.
Baldwyn had now recovered himself sufficiently to stand in the doorway considering the fatal scene.
He muttered something in his language. 'This is terrible,' he translated. 'A murder.'
âYou agree this is one, then?â Wat checked.
âOf course, it is,â Baldwyn gave as good as he got. âAnd whoever did this must be found and brought to justice.â
âLucky weâve got a Kingâs Investigator with us,â Cwen said.
Baldwyn scowled at her. âWe didnât have any murders at all until you turned up.â
âI think youâd already had two,â Wat said, quite gently this time. âWe only got here a few hours ago and this poor lad has been gone for some time.â
âWho would do it?â Baldwyn repeated the question.
