Steam filled the bathroom, clouding my vision of the mirror as I stepped out of the shower. Gunner would be here any minute, and I'd yet to get dressed.

Swiping the mirror with my towel, I got a vague image of myself in the reflection, though it was still too steamy to see much. I brushed my curly hair, pulling it into a loose bun to keep it out of my way. Before I could reach for my clothes, my phone rang.

Gunner's name blinked on the screen and I accepted. "Hey, I'm almost ready, just need to put my shoes on." A white lie.

I could almost hear the eye roll. "Please, you probably haven't even showered yet."

"I'll have you know I just stepped out of the shower," I retorted, wrapping the towel around my body to cover myself from absolutely nobody's eyes but my own.

"Oh, really?" he asked, his voice holding a thick seduction that was intended to be humorous, but made my insides melt all the same.

The devil on my shoulder begged me to flirt with him, tease him a little. But the angel on the other side told me to behave.

"Where are you?" I asked, avoiding the mention of the shower.

"I'm outside."

"You know where the key is if you want to wait inside. I'll be ready in a minute."

"See you then," he said, his voice turning my belly to mush, making the pitter-patter of my heart jump into full speed.

I hung up the phone and frantically looked for my clothes, partly because I didn't want to listen to him drone on later about how I take forever getting ready, but partly because I was suddenly so nervous about getting dressed. I was still naked, and even though he wasn't in the room, it felt like he could see me.

Slipping back into my leggings and T-shirt, I glanced at my reflection—which was now clear after the steam had settled—and realized I looked so homely. Any other time that wouldn't bother me, but since our evening the night before, when things got heated, I couldn't stand the thought of looking so drab around him.

I self-consciously tugged at my shirt, pulling it off to trade it for another. Thankfully, I hadn't picked up my clothes recently and there was a mostly-clean shirt hanging on the towel rack—a shirt that was cute and enhanced my curves.

Within minutes, I appeared from the bathroom, needing only my shoes to be ready.

"It's about time," Gunner teased, hopping up from the couch.

I shoved him playfully, my hand lingering on his shoulder. "Oh, please. That was record timing."

We drove out to the overlook as I had suggested to Jackson. If I could say anything about that man, it was that he could follow a plan. That was a plus, even if I didn't trust anything else about him.

Gunner pulled into a parking space, cutting off his lights. The area was secluded, vacant. Not a soul was around for miles. Somehow it was both comforting and eerie. The silence was what made my nerves rattle the most.
