Training with Sydney was an experience unlike anything I'd faced since that evil gym teacher in middle school who told me I'd never be able to throw a ball. Well, I showed her! Just as Ollie said, my competitive side had taken over, and I'd thrown the ball so hard, her star player had to run to fetch it. Oh, the satisfied grin on my face after...

But Sydney was something else entirely.

She showed up at my home, Gunner leaning against the wooden post beside her. Syd took one step inside, looked around, and said "nope" as she walked back out. According to her, we needed an open field, preferably somewhere private. So, we went to the park and used one of the fields there.

Gunner was ushered off before we started, which made things even more tense. I believe her words were, "Get lost, wolf-boy. You're too much of a distraction." He shrugged and walked off, as if nothing had happened.

"All right, let's get this over with," she said, turning to face me.

Tell me she didn't want to be there without telling me she didn't want to be there...

"What do you know?" she asked, dropping the bag she carried to the ground. Her long, dark hair was pulled tightly into a high ponytail. Her sporty leggings had a red design down the leg, matching the red tank top that ended just above her belly button. Though she was slim, she was toned. Like Gunner, you couldn't tell how muscular she was until they were on display.

The woman was athletic—that, I could tell by just looking at her.

"I don't know anything about fighting, really. I mean, I fought off an attacker last month, but that was pure survival. I don't know any moves or anything," I answered honestly.

"Shit," she grumbled. "So you're a total newbie." She waved her arms in the air, cursing Hudson. "Well, at least I know you can fight in a survival situation. But we've got a lot to learn, so let's cut the 'get to know you' bullshit and start."

Though she wasn't waiting for an answer, I nodded confirmation. Her energy was so intimidating, I had to do something.

She began teaching me different moves, starting with basics. She taught me fighting stances and form. When my leg was slightly off, she'd smack it into place. Hard. Syd was like a damn drill sergeant, but meaner. Boy, could she be cold.

"You'll never find your sister if you keep fighting like shit!"

Still, I gritted my teeth and tried again.

"You expect to take down the LSS like that?" She laughed. "Jesus, I should just give up now. You'll never get it."

You'll never throw that ball. The words chimed into my mind, reminding me of gym class. I'd show her. I tried again. And again. I tried until sweat poured over my face, stinging my eyes and clouding my vision.

At one point, I was ready to throw my arms up and call it a day. I shouted at her to "Leave me
