I sat in the recliner near the fireplace with the binder in my lap. I’d read through countless pages already. So far, I’d memorized every existing business name and learned of my uncle’s ideas to fill the vacant shops.

The most helpful section was on the Midnight Sun Café, which I would be opening soon. There was a list of equipment and furniture he’d ordered, plus a menu he’d planned with all the recipes. Suddenly, I felt a little better knowing that I’d have some guidance to get me started. I was pleased to see my uncle’s instructions for keeping the sourdough starter alive as well.

Tomorrow, I’d have to practice using the espresso machines.

As I flipped through a few more pages, a note fluttered out and fell to the floor. I bent to pick it up.

It said:

“Roy, please sign the contract and return it via certified mail by June 10th. Mark.”

I frowned. “What contract?” I paged through the binder and found the section on signed leases and equipment invoices. But there was nothing that indicated which contract needed to be signed. It was only the beginning of June. I hoped I’d find whatever Mark, whoever that was, wanted signed. Wait. Mark. Wasn’t that the name of Uncle Roy’s lawyer? I made a mental note to call him in the morning. I needed to talk to him anyway.

A knock on the door startled me. “Who could that be?” I made my way to the door and cautiously opened it a crack. An older woman with her graying hair pulled into a ponytail stood on the porch holding a basket. She was wearing a periwinkle shirt, a purple fleece vest, and a pair of old jeans.

I opened the door wider. “Hi. Can I help you?”

The lady smiled, her blue eyes twinkling. “Hello! You must be Denali, Roy’s niece. I’ve brought you a basket of goodies to welcome you to Gold Rush.” She held the basket out, and I took it out of her arms.

“Well, thank you so much!” I was so surprised, I almost forgot to invite her inside. Then I remembered my manners. “Won’t you come in?”

She stepped past me into the kitchen. “Thank you.”

Once I closed the door behind us, she said, “I’m Jade, Jasper’s wife. He said you might need a little help in the kitchen. I’m happy to help you get set up. Do you know how to make pastries and the like?”

I swallowed hard. “No. I’m a little worried about that, to be honest.”

Jade laughed. “Nothing to worry about. You seem like a smart girl. I’m sure you’re a quick study. She pointed at the basket. “I helped Roy flesh out the menu for your café and came up with the recipes as well. You’ll find a selection of pastries that match some recipes featured in the menu. Plus, I included a loaf of sourdough bread, a jar of honey from our local beekeeper, and some salmonberry jam.”

I blinked. “Wow. Thank you. You don’t know how relieved I am to have some help.
