Clear thinking and concentration can produce incisive results when mind and body are attuned. Here, two fencing experts battle it out at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.

Although there is no scientific explanation for such problems, it is almost certain that the risk of such performance-related inadequacies can be minimized by positive thinking and visualization. By putting yourself mentally in the frame of what you need to achieve, by visualizing it and imagining yourself overcoming the challenge, you are likely to perform with far greater composure and greater potency. Your positive preparation before the event and your clear idea about your goal will enable you to overcome all the possible mishaps.

It is no use having ability and training your body to a high level of efficiency if your mind is not up to the job of guiding it in the right direction and keeping it on course. By thinking through potential problems, as opposed to nervously anticipating the worst, you steel your mind to perform on the actual occasion. There could be two problems here, however. One is the unrealistic thought that you cannot do something, and the other is a delusion of grandeur. Both of these extremes may result in the lack of preparation needed for success, as in one case you do not prepare properly because you think you will never make it, and in the other instance you do not prepare properly because you think it is unnecessary.
