Chapter 9

The fire had hit everyone hard, leaving an indelible mark on our minds. The once-charming pastel building now stood hauntingly dilapidated, its walls tainted with ash, serving as a stark reminder that Mayhem was caught up in something sinister.

I still have such a clear memory of how we dashed out of the Salon in a panicked frenzy, eager to catch a glimpse of the sirens blazing past us. It was Bruce who drove Abby and me to the beauty parlor that was engulfed in flames, where the latest coma victim was trapped inside.

The rescue team had just managed to pull her to safety, but it was a close call. The person in question was none other than Cecelia, the spirited owner of Ceecee's Skinship. Her bustling beauty parlor, which offered a wide array of services that piqued the interest of all the ladies of Mayhem, including myself, had fallen victim to the fire.

The Idea of Gina and Dunk, trapped in a forced slumber, had already unsettled us deeply. But with Cecelia's harrowing experience, the situation took on a whole new level of terror. Her shop had gone up in flames while she was inside. Fortunately, she was rescued in the nick of time, but things were escalating to extreme measures.

It was becoming increasingly clear that the chaos wasn't solely targeting me anymore. A nagging feeling persisted within me, suggesting that I, too, could become a victim of this madness at any given moment. Whoever was responsible, be it Henry or Cherry, needed to face the consequences of their actions.

And I was going to personally ensure that their impending doom arrived sooner than they could blink.

It had been three days since the fire incident, and the tension was palpable. We all felt the heat, and the competence of the police came under scrutiny, leaving many of us questioning their abilities.

Amidst everything, I still picked up on the raised eyebrows and curious glances directed toward me. People were beginning to wonder why I hadn't found myself behind cold, steel bars yet.

Funny enough, I found myself pondering the same question about our suspects.

I shifted my gaze across the scattered notes sprawled across my bed's gray sheets, the occasional snacks peeking out amidst the papers and photographs. By my side, Archie, my sweet German shepherd panted softly as his paws playfully batted at his blue rubber ball.

My attention was drawn to a shortlist that captured my interest. It outlined the potential elements of Henry's and Cherry's lives that could be intertwined with the case I was investigating.

The case of the coma witch, a name proudly sponsored by the townsfolk of mayhem.

First, there was Cherry, the bitter florist who once threatened Dunk. She had marked maps pinpointing the exact location of the mall square, photographs featuring the various business owners, and a notably close relationship with our other suspect—Henry. Moreover, her quaint flower shop boasted an eccentric assortment of peculiar plants, lending an air of intrigue to her involvement.

And then we had Henry Keagan, the duplicitous investor with an insatiable greed for acquiring the recently affected businesses.
